Rebuilding after a line fails

When an underground line has failed, the repair is only part of the job. The ground around a broken water line may have been washed out; the pavement over a collapsed storm pipe may have settled; a sewer lateral that backed up may have shown a longer section in poor condition. A typical sequence:

• Make the line safe. Close valves where the owner can, and contact the utility if a public main, gas or electric line may be involved.

• Expose and assess. Uncover the damaged area, often with hydro excavation near other lines, and see how far the damage goes.
• Repair or replace. Fix the damaged section, or replace a longer run where the condition calls for it.
• Restore. Backfill and compact, then rebuild the surface to the owner's standard.
