Minnesota jobs and how they start

Most Minnesota jobs begin with a site and a problem: a main to replace, a new building to connect, a line that has stopped working. Our first questions are about that site: where it is, who owns the line, what lies around it and what the owner expects when the work is done.

A short description goes a long way. "Water service to a new building pad, about 200 feet from the main, crossing a parking lot" tells us far more than "need a quote for a water line", and it shortens the back-and-forth before a site visit or a quote.

Ways to reach a buried line

• Open trench when the route is clear and the surface can be opened and restored.
• Directional drilling when the line has to pass under a road, a driveway or water.
• Hydro excavation when existing utilities must be exposed without mechanical digging.
• Hydro vacuum work when material has to be removed from pits, sumps or structures.

The owner's specification and the ground decide which of these, or which combination, fits.

Minnesota's notification center is Gopher State One Call, under Minnesota Statutes chapter 216D. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 216D.04) requires at least 48 hours of notice, not counting the day of notice, weekends or holidays, and no more than 14 calendar days; a ticket is valid for 14 calendar days.
