Crossing obstacles without open cuts

Many underground jobs come down to a crossing. A water service has to reach a building on the far side of a driveway; a sewer line has to pass beneath a road; conduit has to cross a waterway or a landscaped strip that the owner wants left alone. Opening the surface is always possible, but it is not always the right choice.

Directional drilling is the alternative. A drilling rig sets up beside an entry pit and steers a drill head along a planned path to an exit pit. The path is enlarged as needed, and the pipe or conduit is pulled back through it. On the surface, only the two pits and the rig's footprint are disturbed.
