Road crossings for new service

A common obstacle for a new water, sewer or power connection is the road between the main and the property. Mains often run on one side of a road, and a new building on the other side needs its service brought across.

There are two ways to do that:

Open cut

The road is cut, the line laid in a trench and the pavement restored. It needs the road owner's permit, traffic control while the road is open, and a patch that meets the owner's standard.

Directional bore

A rig on one side drills beneath the road to the other, and the pipe or conduit is pulled back through. The road stays open; the work happens in two small pits beside it. It needs a clear path between existing utilities and ground that suits drilling.

Which is used depends on the road owner's requirements, the size of the line, the ground and the utilities near the crossing, which are exposed with hydro excavation before the bore path is settled.

NC811

Under North Carolina's Underground Utility Safety and Damage Prevention Act, a locate request goes to NC811 before excavation. North Carolina law (G.S. 87-122) requires at least three full working days of notice, and a ticket ends 28 calendar days after the work start date. Road crossings also need the road owner's permit.
