Industrial corridors and their crossings
Industrial and commercial corridors are often lined by busy roads, rail lines and drainage features, and a new utility connection frequently has to cross one of them. Each crossing raises the same question: open the surface, or go beneath it?
An open cut across a road needs the road owner's permit, traffic control and pavement restoration, and it closes at least part of the road while the work is done. A directional bore needs room for a rig and two pits, a path clear of existing utilities and ground that suits drilling, but it leaves the road open.
Rail crossings and crossings of drainage features usually need the approval of their owners, who set their own conditions for depth, casing and inspection.
In every case the existing utilities near the crossing are located through MISS DIG 811 and exposed with hydro excavation where the new line comes close.
We also take on smaller jobs, such as water services, sewer laterals, storm connections and conduit for homes and businesses. We work for businesses, developers, public owners and homeowners.
MISS DIG 811 notice
MISS DIG 811 is Michigan's notification system under Public Act 174 of 2013. Michigan law (MCL 460.725) requires at least 72 hours of notice, or three business days, and no more than 14 calendar days, and a ticket is valid for 21 days (180 days for long projects). Crossings of roads and rail lines need their owners' permits.
