For most new or replacement lines, the main method decision is between an open trench and a directional bore. Neither is always right.

An open trench suits routes across open ground, where the surface can be opened and restored easily. It gives full access to the line, makes connections simple and lets inspectors see the work. Its costs are on the surface: the opening, the spoil and the restoration.

A directional bore suits routes beneath things that should stay intact, such as roads, driveways, parking areas, sidewalks or landscaping.
