Storm drainage on small lots

On a small lot, storm water has few places to go. Roof downspouts, driveway drains and yard inlets may connect to a private pipe that runs to the street system or to a drainage structure on the property. When that pipe clogs, separates or is crushed, water ponds against the building or across the drive.

Fixing it starts with tracing the system: where each drain enters, where the pipe runs and where it discharges. Sediment and debris can be cleared from structures and pipes with a vacuum truck, which also shows whether the pipe itself is damaged. Damaged sections are exposed, often with hydro excavation because water and sewer services usually run close by, and replaced with pipe laid to a slope that carries the water away.
