Requests about sewers are easier when everyone uses the same words for the same parts.

• The building drain collects wastewater inside the building.
• The lateral, or building sewer, carries it from the building to the public system. It usually belongs to the property owner.
• The cleanout is an access point on the lateral, used for cleaning and camera inspection.
• The tap or wye is where the lateral joins the main.
• The main runs under the street and belongs to the public system, which sets the rules for connecting to it.
• Manholes give access to the main at intervals.
