Sewer work divides into two kinds of line, and the difference matters when something goes wrong.

Gravity sewers, including the lateral from each building, rely on slope. Wastewater flows downhill through the pipe to a larger main, and the pipe has to keep a continuous grade to do so. When a gravity line sags, separates or is invaded by roots, flow slows and backs up. Repairs have to restore the grade as well as the pipe.

Force mains carry wastewater under pressure, pumped from a lift station to a higher point in the system. They behave more like water mains: they can follow the ground, but a break releases flow under pressure and has to be isolated before it can be repaired.
