Where vacant lots and older buildings are being reused, underground work often begins by dealing with the past. A lot that once held a house may still have a water service and a sewer lateral running to it, abandoned but connected to the public systems. A building being restored may have services that have not been used in a long time.

Before a new building connects, or an old one returns to use, the questions are:

• Are there existing services, and are they still connected to the mains?

Under Indiana Code chapter 8-1-26, a locate request goes to Indiana 811 before digging. Notice must be given at least two full working days and at most 10 calendar days ahead, and the ticket lasts 20 calendar days (IC 8-1-26-16). Abandoned private services are not marked by the one-call process.
