Combined and separate sewers

In some older systems, rainwater and wastewater share the same sewer pipes. Owners of such systems often work to keep rainwater out of sanitary lines, and property owners may be asked to disconnect downspouts or area drains from a sanitary lateral and give them a separate outlet. Whether that applies to a given property depends on the local system and its owner.

Where a property is asked to separate its flows, the work usually involves:

• tracing where each roof drain, area drain and floor drain currently connects;
• providing a new storm connection or outlet that the system owner approves;
• reconnecting the drains to it so that the sanitary lateral carries only wastewater;
• inspection by the system owner before the trench is closed.

The work uses the usual methods: OUPS locate, hydro excavation around existing services, open trenching across lawn and directional drilling beneath drives or walks.

OUPS

Under Ohio Revised Code 3781.25 to 3781.38, a locate request goes to OUPS before excavation. Notice must be given at least two working days before digging, not counting the day of notice; there is no fixed ticket life, and digging must start within 16 calendar days (ORC 3781.28).
