Protecting finished surfaces

On many properties, the most valuable things near an underground line are on the surface: decorative pavers, landscaped beds, pool decks, mature trees and irrigation. A plan for repairing or installing a line should account for them before the first opening is made.

Three approaches help keep restoration small.

Precise locating. One-call marks, the owner's records and exposing the line with hydro excavation at a few points show exactly where it runs, so the opening can be placed where it does the least damage.

Drilling beneath finished areas. Where a line must pass under a driveway, a walkway or a planted bed, directional drilling can carry pipe or conduit beneath it, with only two small pits at the ends.

Planned restoration. Pavers can be lifted and relaid, sod replaced and beds replanted, to whatever standard the owner sets, as long as it is agreed before the work begins.
