Underground utility services

From fiber builds to emergency repairs, each service page covers the scope, the method and what to send for a quote.

From locate to restoration

Every job moves through the same four stages. The method at each stage follows the site, the utility and the owner's specifications.

  1. Worker with a handheld locating device walking over grass marked with red, blue and yellow utility paint, with a truck and an excavator behind.
    01

    Locate

We request 811 utility locates and expose critical crossings before the ground is opened.

  2. Excavator bucket digging a trench in a lawn beside red and orange locate paint marks and colored marker flags.
    02

    Excavate

We open the trench or bore pits and shore or slope the walls as the depth and soil require.

  3. Gloved hands tightening a coupling on blue PVC water pipe laid on sand bedding in a trench, with a wrench on the sand beside it.
    03

    Install

We lay and join pipe, conduit or cable to line and grade, or repair the damaged section.

  4. Road roller and workers finishing fresh asphalt on a residential street at sunset, with traffic cones along the edge.
    04

    Restore

We backfill and compact in lifts, then restore the pavement, lawn or right-of-way to the project specifications.

Frequently asked questions

What does Blackstone Utilities do?

Blackstone Utilities is an underground utility contractor headquartered in Huntley, Illinois, led by fiber optic installation for broadband providers and residential neighborhoods. We also build underground power, water and sewer lines, and provide hydro vacuum services, excavation and trenching, and emergency utility repair across the Midwest and Southeast.

Do you install fiber optic cable?

Yes. Fiber optic installation is our main line of work: aerial and underground construction, directional drilling, splicing, and maintenance and troubleshooting, for fiber providers, their prime contractors and residential neighborhoods. We take on a single stage of a build or the whole job, from the route to the final splice.

Which states do you serve?

We work across the Midwest and Southeast; the states are listed on our Service Areas page, and each state page covers the services offered there, the state's 811 rules and the cities with their own page. Send the site location with your request, and we will confirm the scope and scheduling.

What information do you need for a quote?

The location of the work, the service you need, a short description of the job and how to reach you. Mention any plans or dimensions in the description, and say whether the work is new or a repair. We follow up by phone or email.

What is directional drilling?

Directional drilling, also called horizontal directional drilling (HDD) or directional boring, installs pipe or conduit along a steered underground path without a continuous open trench. A rig drills a pilot bore between an entry pit and an exit pit, reams it and pulls the pipe or conduit back through, so roads, driveways and lawns stay intact.

What are hydro vacuum services?

Hydro vacuum services dig with pressurized water and a vacuum instead of a bucket: a truck-mounted unit cuts the soil while the vacuum draws the slurry into a debris tank. They expose buried utilities without damaging them, for potholing, slot trenching and daylighting, and remove the spoil.
